Jetboil SUMO Cooking System 1.8L
Our Thoughts On The Sumo…
I’ve carried my fair share of stoves on backpacking trips across the UK, and most are fine for a quick brew or boiling water. But the Sumo is in a different league. It’s built for proper meals and group cooking, not just survival rations. The 1.8-litre pot gives you room to actually cook not just rehydrate a packet. I’ve knocked up breakfast & a brew for myself, pasta for two, and morning porridge for the whole group with one boil.
What makes it stand out for me is the heat control. It’s not just mighty flame thrower like most gas stoves. You can turn it right down and simmer which ideal for cooking pasta or gently warming a tin of curry without burning it to the bottom. That kind of control in a camp stove is rare, and it means meals feel like, well, meals not just fuel.
The push-button ignition is rock solid too. I’ve fired it up in freezing rain on Dartmoor and icy mornings in the peaks without any issues. No faffing about with matches or lighters. It just works.
Everything packs inside the main pot, including a 230g fuel canister, stabiliser, and burner. It’s compact, tidy, and doesn’t rattle around in your rucksack. For a setup that boils water in just over four minutes, that’s pretty impressive. And for winter trips or group wild camps, it’s a game changer.
Now, it’s not the lightest bit of kit if you’re going ultralight solo, it’s more stove than you need. But if you’re out with a partner, or just like a decent hot meal and proper cuppa when you’re camped on the side of a fell, it’s hard to beat.
In short: the Jetboil Sumo has become one of my essential bits of gear for multi-day trips in the UK. It’s reliable, efficient, and makes cooking in wild places feel less like a chore and more like something to look forward to.
